Waxworms

Waxworms are an excellent supplemental food for wild birds, offering high nutritional value with their rich protein and fat content, which is particularly beneficial during energy-intensive periods like breeding, moulting, or winter. Their soft exoskeleton makes them easy for birds of all sizes, including chicks and smaller species, to digest, unlike harder-shelled insects. Waxworms are highly palatable, making them a favourite among wild birds and a useful tool for attracting picky eaters to feeders.

For bird enthusiasts, waxworms are a great way to support nesting parents and growing chicks, as their high-energy nutrients aid in healthy development. Additionally, they can be used to encourage birds to visit specific feeding areas, helping to establish a reliable birdwatching spot. However, waxworms should be fed in moderation as part of a varied diet, as their high-fat content can lead to obesity if overconsumed. Offering them as an occasional treat alongside seeds, fruits, and other insects ensures wild birds receive a balanced diet while enjoying the benefits of this nutritious and appealing food source.
